Geochemistry and isotope systematics of sulphur in the mixing zone of Bahamian blue holes

چکیده

Abstraet -A profile of aqueous S species concentrations and stable isotope compositions is presented for the mixing zone of Cousteau's Blue Hole, North Andros, Bahamas, together with similar, but less detailed results from two other blue holes. These data show that S o and S 2are produced by bacterially mediated sulphate reduction near the base of the mixing zone and that these species are reoxidized at shallower levels. Acidity generated by oxidation can contribute to corrosiOn of limestone walbrock. Estimated rates of such corrosion range up to 1200 mm wall-rock recession per 10 ka at Cousteau's Blue Hole (equivalent to 16% porosity generation per l0 ka) and are comparable with rates of dissolution caused by inorganic mixing corrosion.

Elemental mixing systematics and Sr–Nd isotope geochemistry of mélange formation: Obstacles to identification of fluid sources to arc volcanics

We present major and trace element concentrations in conjunction with Sr–Nd isotope ratios to investigate the geochemical characteristics of mélange formation along the subduction zone slab–mantle interface. Mélange matrix of the Catalina Schist formed within an active subduction zone of the southern California borderland in Cretaceous time. Mélange formed through the synergistic effects of def...

Anomaly XVI-B located in Central Iran Structural Zone. The oldest rock formations in this study area are related to metamorphic rocks which are included gneiss, micaschist, amphibolite and megmatite. Mineralized intruded mass distinguished by alkaline diorite-syenite that cut Bonoshorow metamorphic complex and limestone units. Metallic mineralization is occurred in syenite, gabbro and skarn roc...

Petrography and Geochemistry of Quaternary travertines in the Ab-Ask region, Mazandaran Province- Iran

The travertine deposit springs are located on the southeast of the Damavand Volcano, 85 km northeast of Tehran Province. The deposits of these springs mainly outcropped with cascade, hill, conical, layered, calcareous Tufa and Fissure-Ridges morphologies. Travertine studies have usually been conducted based on field observations, geochemistry and hydrology. The tectonic activity of the region, ...

ELECTRON PARAMAGNETIC RESONANCE (EPR) SPECTROSCOPY AND GEOCHEMISTRY IN TIN EXPLORATION AT RENISON, TASMANIA AUSTRALIA

Rock powder of dolomite samples from the Renison mine area of Tasmania, Australia were analyzed by electron paramagnentic resonance spectroscopy (EPR), Atomic Absorption and Mass Spectrometer to identify alteration related to mineralisation. The least-altered dolomite samples, which are not effected by circulation of diagenetic and hydrothermal fluids are characterised by low Mn and Fe and ...

The influence of poorly interconnected fault zone flow paths on spring geochemistry

Thermal springs commonly occur along faults because of the enhanced vertical permeability afforded by fracture zones. Field and laboratory studies of fault zone materials document substantial heterogeneities in fracture permeabilities. Modeling and field studies of springs suggest that spatial variations in permeability strongly influence spring locations, discharge rates and temperatures. The ...
